APPEAL SUCCESS IN MARKET HARBOROUGH

We are delighted to have secured permission within the conservation area of Market Harborough town centre for visual and security enhancements within a service yard to the rear of the High Street.  The Council had already agreed to the demolition of a single storey building and car park surfacing.  The dispute in this case came down to the style of fencing and gates.  The Council were insisting upon ‘estate style’ fencing whereas the client had proposed a mix of close boarded and weld-mesh fencing and gates, some of which had already been installed, and which the Inspector was able to observe on their site visit.

The Inspector agreed that the proposals were acceptable in the context of the surroundings, stating that:

“…whilst estate rail fencing is not uncommon in certain historic settings, it is not typically characteristic of town centre service yard environments. As such, I do not consider it necessary to insist upon this style of fencing in this context”.

They concluded that the proposals would preserve the character and appearance of the conservation area and granted permission, giving our client a further 3 years to start the remainder of the works.
